Out of necessity, I had to walk away from everyone I cared about. For their own protection and peace of mind. My world is sad and lonely.
My old job at Bed Bath and Beyond taught me how to smile and be polite though despair. I went through my first set of major losses, during my time there. It was a Jewish company (at the time.) No better teacher than that culture, and the company’s code of ethics, to learn strength and grace during very difficult life moments.
That skill became a very useful tool to help me to not collapse in misery later in life. It’s the strength and authenticity of the smile that stays on my face, even through the tears. It’s why I always choose kindness over spite.
