Perfectly Human

Trying to understand complex subjects… one failure at a time.

This poem, titled “Valkyrie” was written as part of a Master of Arts capstone collection. It is free-form and does not have a rhyming pattern. It also lacks consistent flow, meter, and rhythm. However, the project’s grade was 100%.

Just short of an identity crisis,

Questioning my place in the world.

I went on a journey.

Leaping like a fool into fear of the unknown,

How suddenly life can plummet into darkness.

Strength was found in the losses,

But they drained my energy

And delayed my success.

The amount of time devoted

To higher education,

Dead ends,

And people who used me,

Equaled time away.

Time wasted,

Lost,

Stolen from those who wouldn’t survive the quest.

For those who have fallen,

I carry my sword.

One day we will meet again in Valhalla,

And we shall bust down the doors.

I finish this voyage with you,

The compass in my chest.

Everyone will hear our battle roars!
